Top 15 places to paddleboard in Europe

In the last 4 years, I have been travelling extensively across Europe, and have kept a paddleboard in the trunk of my car. I've taken every opportunity during summers, when I have free time and find myself near large bodies of water, to take out the paddleboard and go paddleboarding. Here are some of my recommendations for places where you could go paddleboarding.

12.Stockholm, Sweden, Croatia

Stockholm Archipelago

Archipelago

Stockholm is located between numerous lakes and the Baltic Sea, so the city offers many beautiful and interesting places for paddleboarding. The famous Archipelago, which is part of Stockholm on the Baltic, with its numerous islands and cliffs, provides plenty of opportunities for paddleboard enthusiasts.

One of my favourite paddleboarding destinations in that area is Vaxholm. Here are the Google Maps coordinates of the place where I enjoyed paddleboarding the most: 59.417296,18.313364.

Stockholm Mälaren

Mälaren lake

The other place where I enjoy to paddleboard is on Lake Mälaren, near the famous Drottningholm Palace. This is a spot where you can park your car, and there is a convenient place to enter the lake with your paddleboard: 59.325250203411095, 17.906495107497946."

10.Zlatibor, Serbia

Ribnica lake

Ribnica lake

The beautiful mountain in Serbia boasts numerous natural beauties, as well as many activities that visitors to the mountain can engage in. One of the activities is paddleboarding on Ribnica Lake. Ribnica Lake is located on the road between the centre of Zlatibor, only a few kilometres away, and the ski centre and Tornik mountain peak.

The lake can be reached by car, but also by the famous Golden Gondola, which has an intermediate station right by the lake. On the lake, you can swim, enjoy nature, and by riding a paddleboard, you can experience the beautiful natural landscapes that surround Ribnica Lake.

7.River Mrežnica, Croatia

River Mrežnica

Picture: Paddleboarding on River Mrežnica

The river Mrežnica is a beautiful river flowing through the hilly karst landscape.

Interesting paddleboarding spots include the stunning waterfalls in the village of Primislje, about 10 km from the town of Slunj. When you turn off the main road from Slunj to Ogulin by car, you drive along a dirt road for about 1.5 km to reach the bank of the Mrežnica River. Here are the coordinates you can enter into Google Maps: 45.173907, 15.453164.

Once you park your car at this location, you should walk about 100 metres down the hill to reach the riverbank. Next to the river is a small wooden building where you can rent kayaks. If you don't have your own paddleboard, I highly recommend renting a kayak or booking one of the tours with a local guide. You'll paddle along the river and navigate through small river rapids. Adventure and fun are guaranteed.

However, if you've brought your own paddleboard, I advise walking about 200 meters further downstream to approximately here: 45.176764, 15.450337. There's a narrow flat area where you can sunbathe, swim, and jump into the water, and nearby are larger waterfalls where water cascades into the lower part of the river, providing opportunities for jumping into the water.

You can paddle upstream from these waterfalls, approximately to the first major upstream falls, located 200 meters away. When you reach the upstream falls, be careful not to get too close, as they can be powerful and may knock you off your paddleboard. If you want to get closer to the falls, I recommend sitting or kneeling on the paddleboard.

Good to know, a little downstream hosts an interesting summer music festival, the Psychedelic Music & Art Festival.

The following pictures depict the waterfalls and the river.

Near the village of Belavić, about here: 45.420317, 15.482466, is another interesting paddleboarding spot, although not as beautiful as Primislje. There's a campsite and small waterfalls where you can swim and paddleboard.

6.Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is the favourite destination of tourists in the region. Besides visiting the city and its walls, tourists can also enjoy swimming in the many beautiful beaches located in various parts of the city during the summer. However, for paddleboarding enthusiasts, there is also the possibility of paddle boarding near the Old Town itself. The sight of the beautiful walls of the Old Town, viewed from the sea on a paddleboard, is an unforgettable experience.

Since Dubrovnik is expensive, especially in the summer, read my article on how you can visit Dubrovnik and save money.

4. Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor old town

Kotor Old Town

Kotor is a fascinating city located on the coast of the Montenegrin Riviera, known for its rich history, picturesque architecture, and stunning natural surroundings. The combination of narrow stone streets, mediaeval walls, and red roofs makes Kotor one of the most beautiful coastal cities in the region. Visitors can explore the narrow alleyways, visit numerous churches and museums, or climb up to the fortress of St. John for an unforgettable view of the bay.

Kotor and mountain Lovcen

Kotor and Lovćen mountain

Kotor is also a popular destination for nature lovers due to its proximity to Mount Lovćen and the spectacular Bay of Kotor, which is one of the deepest fjords in the Mediterranean.

Boka kotorska

There are many small beaches around the city where you can paddleboard. What's unique is that while paddleboarding around this city, you'll experience beautiful moments with views of incredible natural beauties of huge mountains plunging into the sea.

3. Las Palmas, Spain

Las Palmas, Playa las Canteras

Playa Las Canteras

Las Palmas is the largest city on Gran Canaria, that has a beautiful beach on the west side of the city, Playa Las Canteras. Besides swimming and sunbathing, various sports can be enjoyed on the beach, including beach volleyball.

Las Canteras

Las Canteras

However, paddleboarding is also very popular, which many people engage in when the sea allows it, i.e., when the waves are not too big. The fact is that about a hundred meters from the shore lies La Barra, a natural reef barrier, which mitigates the strength and height of the waves reaching the shore at Las Canteras Beach. Because of that, it's possible to paddleboard along the coast parallel to the shore, and the special charm is the opportunity to paddleboard to La Barra.

What I would advise is to ask the beach guards for advice on where the ocean currents are weaker, as there is a part of the beach that is dangerous due to strong currents and large waves.

Playa del Confital, Las Palmas

Playa del Confital

Another beach that I would gladly recommend is Playa del Confital. The beach is located at the north west end of the city, north of Playa Las Canteras. It's a very beautiful, natural, and wild beach, unlike Playa Las Canteras, which is a typical city beach near the city centre.

Playa del Confital

Playa del Confital, Las Palmas

Playa del Confital is situated between a high hill and the sea. In the distance, you can see the outlines of the island of Tenerife. The beach is exposed to strong waves, although I once paddled there with a paddleboard, I wouldn't recommend paddleboarding because it can be dangerous due to strong ocean currents and waves, as well as numerous reefs.

2. Bled, Slovenia

Bled lake

Bled lake

The beautiful lake near the Slovenian border with Austria possesses incredible natural beauty. I have often seen pictures of Lake Bled on many computer screenshots, so perhaps you, dear reader, have an image of Bled on your computer without even realising it. Lake Bled nestles amidst the mountains and hills of the Alps, with a small island in the middle topped by a church. On the northern side stands an interesting castle, offering a view far across the peaks of the Alps.

Thus, paddling on a paddleboard on Lake Bled provides an unforgettable experience. When I paddled on the lake, reached the island, and climbed up to the church, There is a restaurant where one can taste various Slovenian specialties. On the island's shore in summer, one can sunbathe and enjoy the beautiful view.

1. Zanjice, Montenegro

Zanjice Monastery

Žanjice monastery and Mamula Island

I've seen many beautiful places, however, Zanjice on the Montenegrin coast is something that has stuck with me since I visited them back in my teenage days. The nature there is breathtaking, a beauty that is hard to describe. One needs to visit that part of Montenegro, the Bay of Kotor and its surroundings, to get a sense of the incredible beauty that area abounds in.

Zanjice Monastery

Zanjice has it all: beautiful sea, towering mountains surrounding it, small islets with a church and a monastery on one of them, old fortresses, stunning beaches. To reach Zanjice, one drives from the direction of Tivat, along narrow, winding roads.

One of the biggest attractions is the island of Gospa and the Orthodox Monastery located on it. There is only one monk living on the island, who is very welcoming and gladly receives guests at the monastery. An important thing to know is that you must have a shirt on; entry to the island and monastery is not allowed if you're only wearing swim trunks.
